So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? Well to begin with they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you know about gemstones the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what you are looking at.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Colors that tend to be darker or paler tend to be less valued.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut gemstone highlights the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence in the cut of the stone is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. The gemstone without flaws is definitely worth much more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Serious hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

The next factors to consider our size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized sapphire or ruby would weigh 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in Arkansas you can find Clear & Smoky Quartz, Diamond and Agate. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the quartz regions in Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia.
