By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.

To start off right you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

Of paramount importance Is gemstone color. Highly prized gemstones have colors that are close to the exact spectral color of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark can lower the value.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to consider. How precise the cut is determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

The next factor to consider is the clarity. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.
