Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

The first item to look at is the color of the stone. You want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. In general terms, the prices of very dark are very pale precious and semi precious stones are lower in value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds along with gemstones. An excellent cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout the surface of the stone. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws can be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt in the garnet fields in Fullarton River in Queensland, Australia.

Tips On loose gemstone beads

Quartz that is formed of multigrained microcrystals, not just of one single crystal, is called chalcedony. The name is applied to many well-known varieties of gemstones. They are found in all 50 states and come in many colors and color combinations. Unlike quartz, chalcedony does not look clear and glassy but waxy and translucent. It refers specifically to translucent white, blue, pale grayish-blue, purple, pink, yellow, orange, red, or solid-colored chalcedony other than carnelian, sard, or Chrysoprase, which are naturally-colored chalcedony varieties. Most chalcedony used in jewelry, as with the stones used by James Avery, is color-enhanced for a more consistent color. It ranks 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness which means it is fairly durable to wear as jewelry.
