The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to buy.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or on the dark side can lower the value quite easily.

The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider in evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will never be consistent.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This refers to the stones purity with no internal conclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.

Tips On loose cut gemstones

Authentic emeralds are very expensive, and not available to the casual collector
. However, with today.s technology scientists can make lab-created emeralds that
can be sold at affordable prices on the open market. They are made by exposing
thin slices of natural beryl to a chemical mixture that is akin to an authentic
emerald. The mixture is one of pure filtered water and acids. Then it is put
under intense heat in saline solution. Then the stone slices cool until crystal
forms and it reaches a gem like thickness. When this process is complete it can
be cut and processed like a gem.

Carats are a measure of weight in gemstones. Due to variations in the chemical composition and density of various types of gemstones, a one carat (1.00 ct.) stone will vary in size depending on the type of gemstone.
For instance, the density of a topaz is greater than the density of a peridot; therefore, the same weight of a one carat topaz will physically be a smaller stone than the same weight of a peridot which will be a larger stone
