How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

Right at the start you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure natural color.

The cut of your gemstone is an important factor to consider when evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will always look inconsistent.

The clarity of a gemstone is our next factor. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in Alaska you can find White Quartz and Jade. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the quartz regions in Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia.
